Your business has one address. The internet probably thinks it has four.
Your Google Business Profile says “Plot 12, Block H, Johar Town.” Your website footer says “12-H Johar Town Lahore.” An old directory listing from 2019 still shows the shop you moved out of. Facebook has a phone number nobody answers anymore.
To a customer, that is annoying. To Google, it is doubt. And doubt costs you map rankings.
What NAP Means and Why Google Cares
NAP stands for Name, Address and Phone number. Many SEOs now say NAPW, adding Website, because the URL is part of your identity too.
Google builds a picture of your business from many sources: your Business Profile, your website, directories, social profiles, maps data and mentions on other sites. When those sources agree, Google trusts that your business is real, where you say it is, and reachable. When they disagree, Google has less confidence, and less confidence usually means lower visibility in the local pack.
Inconsistent NAP also confuses customers. A wrong number on a directory sends calls to a dead line. A wrong address sends a customer to your old shop. Those people leave reviews.
Why Pakistani Businesses Have a Bigger NAP Problem
Pakistan does not have a single standardized addressing system across cities. That creates problems you will not read about in Western local SEO guides.
| Pakistani NAP Issue | Example | Effect |
| Multiple names for one area | “Pak Arab Society,” “PAHS,” “Pak Arab Housing Scheme” | Google may treat them as different locations |
| Phase and block formats | “DHA Ph-5,” “DHA Phase V,” “Defence Phase 5” | Address matching weakens |
| Landmark-based addresses | “Opposite Jamia Masjid, near Main Chowk” | No machine-readable address |
| Urdu and English versions | Business name in Urdu on signage, English online | Name mismatch across platforms |
| Mobile number churn | Owner’s number changed, old one still listed | Calls lost, data conflict |
| Office moves | Directories still show the previous address | Two locations competing |
| Rebranding | Old business name on older listings | Google sees two businesses |
In Karachi, the same problem shows up with “Gulshan-e-Iqbal Block 13-D” written five different ways. In Gujranwala and Sialkot, landmark-based addresses are even more common. Our teams handling digital marketing in Karachi and digital marketing in Gujranwala see these patterns on almost every local audit.
Which NAP Differences Matter and Which Do Not
Truth be told, not every difference is a problem. Google is good at matching small formatting variations. Here is how we prioritize.
| Difference | Risk Level | Fix Priority |
| Completely different address (old location) | High | Fix immediately |
| Different phone number | High | Fix immediately |
| Old business name after rebrand | High | Fix immediately |
| Missing suite, floor or plot number | Medium | Fix in the first cleanup round |
| Different area name variant (PAHS vs Pak Arab Society) | Medium | Standardize over time |
| Abbreviations like “St” vs “Street” | Low | Fix when convenient |
| Phone format (042-1234567 vs +92 42 1234567) | Very low | Optional |
Spend your time on the high-risk items first. Fixing “Road” vs “Rd” on 40 directories while your old address is still live on Facebook is wasted effort.
The Real Cost of Inconsistent NAP
Picture a Lahore physiotherapy clinic that moved from Gulberg to Model Town. It updated its Google Business Profile but left:
- An old directory listing with the Gulberg address
- A Facebook page showing the old landline
- A website contact page with both addresses
- Two local health portals with the old address
In a situation like this, the clinic commonly sees map visibility in Model Town stall for months, while patients keep calling the old landline. Once the old references are cleaned up and the website shows one address, visibility usually improves within weeks.
Step-by-Step NAP Cleanup Plan
Step 1: Create a Master NAP Record
Write down the one official version of your details:
- Name: Exactly as on your signboard and registration
- Address: Plot or building, street, area, block or phase, city, postal code
- Phone: One primary local number, plus WhatsApp if different
- Website: One canonical URL, with or without www, always https
Share this with everyone who touches your marketing. Your receptionist, your web developer and your social media manager should all use the same record.
Step 2: Fix Your Own Properties First
Start with what you control:
- Google Business Profile
- Website header, footer and contact page
- Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube profiles
- Apple Business Connect and Bing Places
- WhatsApp Business profile
Your social pages get crawled often, and they are easy to fix. Our Facebook and Instagram marketing team checks profile details as part of every onboarding.
Step 3: Add LocalBusiness Schema to Your Website
Structured data tells Google your NAP in a machine-readable format. Add LocalBusiness schema with your name, address, phone, geo coordinates, opening hours and sameAs links to your social profiles. Your schema must match your Business Profile exactly. If your site is on WordPress and the theme makes schema awkward, our WordPress development team can implement it cleanly. A proper technical SEO audit will also catch broken or conflicting schema.
Step 4: Find Every Existing Citation
Search Google for:
- Your business name plus city
- Your phone number in different formats
- Your old address, if you moved
- Your old business name, if you rebranded
List every result in a spreadsheet with the URL, the details shown, and whether they match your master record.
Use a simple tracking sheet like this:
| Source | URL | Name Match | Address Match | Phone Match | Action | Status |
| Google Business Profile | Your listing link | Yes | Yes | Yes | None | Done |
| Facebook page | Page link | Yes | No (old block) | No (old landline) | Edit page info | In progress |
| Local directory A | Listing link | Yes | No (old address) | Yes | Claim and edit | Requested |
| Health portal B | Listing link | Old brand name | Yes | Yes | Email support | Pending |
Sort by risk level from the earlier table. Old addresses and wrong phone numbers go to the top.
Step 5: Update or Remove Incorrect Listings
Claim the listing where possible and edit it. For directories without claim options, use the contact form or support email. Some old listings will never update. That is fine. Focus on the ones that rank on page one for your name.
Step 6: Handle Duplicates
Duplicate Google Business Profiles are the most damaging NAP issue. If an old profile exists for a previous address, mark it as moved or request removal through Google support.
Step 7: Monitor Quarterly
New citations appear automatically as data aggregators scrape the web. Check quarterly and after any change to your details.
When You Move, Rebrand or Change Your Number
These three events create most NAP chaos. Plan them.
| Event | What to Update First | Common Mistake |
| Office move | GBP address, website, top 10 citations | Creating a new GBP instead of editing the old one |
| Rebrand | GBP name (with proof), website, social handles | Leaving old name on directories for years |
| Number change | GBP, website, WhatsApp, top citations | Disconnecting the old number before listings update |
| New website domain | GBP website field, citations, social links | Not redirecting old URLs, which our guide to 301 redirects explains |
Keep the old phone number active for at least three months after a change, with call forwarding if possible.
NAP, AI Answers and Data Aggregators
Inconsistent NAP now causes a newer problem. Google’s AI features and other AI assistants assemble answers about local businesses from many sources at once. If three sources show your old address, an AI answer may repeat it with total confidence. Customers then trust the AI over your website.
Data also spreads. Map providers, driving apps and smaller directories copy from each other. One wrong entry in a widely scraped source can reappear on a dozen sites within months. That is why cleanup starts with the big sources: Google, Apple, Bing, Facebook and the top Pakistani directories that rank for your name. Fix those and the smaller copies tend to correct over time.
NAP and Multi-Location Businesses
Each branch needs its own unique NAP: its own address, its own local phone number, its own location page. Do not use one head-office number for all branches. Google needs to tell them apart, and so do customers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does NAP consistency still matter in 2026?
Yes, though less as a direct ranking factor than a decade ago. It matters most as a trust signal and for avoiding duplicate or conflicting listings, which do real damage.
Should I write my address in Urdu as well?
Use English consistently across citations for matching. If your customers search in Urdu, add Urdu content on your website, but keep the core NAP identical in English.
Can I use a mobile number instead of a landline?
Yes. Many Pakistani businesses do. Just use the same one everywhere and keep it active.
