How Agencies Fake SEO Results and How to Check Their Numbers

Table of Contents

Most bad SEO reports are not technically lies. Every number is real. The rankings exist. The traffic happened. The chart is accurate.

The deception is in what was chosen, what was left out, and how it was framed.

We have audited enough reports handed over by business owners to see the same ten tricks again and again. Here is how each one works, and the exact steps to check the numbers yourself using free tools you already own.

Why Faked Results Are So Common

SEO is slow and hard to attribute. Clients want proof every month. Some agencies fill that gap with numbers that look like progress. In a market where many retainers are priced low, there is pressure to show “wins” without doing the work that creates them.

The fix is simple. Own your data, and know where to look.

Trick 1: Cherry-Picked Keywords

How it works: The report tracks 30 keywords, and 25 are on page one. Impressive, until you check search volume. Most are long phrases nobody types, like “best affordable dental clinic for families in Johar Town Lahore.” Or the list includes your own brand name.

How to check: Open Google Search Console, go to Performance, and look at the queries that actually bring clicks. Compare that list with the keywords in the report. If the report’s keywords barely appear in Search Console, they do not matter.

Trick 2: Personalized Ranking Screenshots

How it works: A screenshot shows you at position 1. It was taken from the agency’s office, logged into an account that has visited your site many times, near your business location.

How to check: Never accept screenshots as ranking proof. Use Search Console average position data, and for local rankings ask for a geo-grid scan across your service area. Rankings vary by location and device.

Trick 3: Convenient Date Ranges

How it works: “Traffic up 85%!” The comparison is October against February, and your business is seasonal. Or the report compares this month with the month your site was down for maintenance.

How to check: Always compare year over year for the same period, alongside month over month. In Search Console, use the Compare tab and choose “Compare last 3 months year over year.”

Trick 4: Blending Brand and Non-Brand Traffic

How it works: Organic traffic grew because your brand got more popular, maybe from a TV appearance, social campaign or new branch. The SEO report takes credit for all of it.

How to check: In Search Console, add a query filter that excludes your brand name and its spelling variants. What remains is the traffic SEO actually influenced.

Trick 5: Bot and Spam Traffic

How it works: Sessions jump from 3,000 to 9,000 in a month. Look closer and the new visitors come from one country you do not serve, stay zero seconds and never scroll.

How to check: In GA4, open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition. Add country and engagement rate. Real organic traffic for a Pakistani business is mostly from Pakistan, with meaningful engagement. Sudden spikes from unrelated countries with near-zero engagement are not customers.

Trick 6: Inflated Conversions

How it works: The report shows 400 conversions. In reality, the “conversion” is any click on any button, or a thank-you page view that fires twice per form, or scrolling 50% of a page.

How to check: In GA4, go to Admin, then Events, and look at what is marked as a key event. Then compare reported form leads against actual enquiries in your inbox or WhatsApp. If the agency reports 120 leads and your team received 35, the tracking is wrong or padded.

Trick 7: Impressions Without Context

How it works: “Impressions up 200%.” Impressions grow when Google shows your page for more queries, including irrelevant ones at position 60. They also rise in 2026 because AI features show more sources on the page without sending clicks, which we cover in what Google AI Mode means for your SEO strategy.

How to check: Look at impressions together with clicks and average position. Then filter to your commercial pages only. Impressions on a blog post about an unrelated topic do not sell anything.

Trick 8: Authority Score Theatre

How it works: “Your domain authority went from 12 to 28.” Third-party scores rise easily with cheap links. They are a tool’s estimate, not a Google metric.

How to check: Ask for the list of links built this month, with URLs. Open them. Are they real sites with real content and an audience? Or anonymous blogs with posts about everything from crypto to cooking? Our guide on how to vet an agency covers the link questions to ask, and a proper link profile review belongs in any SEO competitor analysis.

How Agencies Fake SEO Results

Trick 9: Taking Credit for Other Channels

How it works: Leads went up because you launched Google Ads on brand terms, ran a Ramadan promotion or opened a new branch. The SEO report claims the growth.

How to check: Look at channel breakdowns in GA4. Paid search, social and direct should be separated from organic search. If you run ads, ask your pay-per-click advertising manager whether brand campaigns changed in the same period.

Trick 10: Reports Without Raw Access

How it works: You only see PDF reports. The agency “manages” Search Console and Analytics, and you have never logged in. Numbers can be edited, chosen or simply wrong, and you cannot check.

How to check: Ask for owner-level access to Search Console, GA4 and Business Profile today. If the properties were created under the agency’s account, ask for ownership transfer. Refusal is the biggest red flag on this list.

What the Report Says vs What Is Really Happening

Here is how a padded monthly summary reads next to the same data checked properly. This is a composite of patterns we see, not one specific client.

Report HeadlineWhat the Raw Data Showed
“Organic traffic up 70%”Two-thirds of new sessions from bots in one foreign country, under 2 seconds engagement
“28 keywords on page one”22 of them get under 10 searches a month. The 5 money keywords had not moved
“Domain authority up 9 points”140 new links, almost all from unrelated blogs created in the last year
“310 conversions”Key event set to any button click. Real enquiries: 41, roughly flat on last year
“Impressions up 150%”Growth from one off-topic blog post ranking at position 40 to 70

Not one headline was false. Every one was misleading. The business was paying for a report, not for growth.

Honest Results Look Less Exciting, and That Is Fine

Real SEO progress is often lumpy. Some months are flat. Some keywords fall while others rise. A Google update can knock rankings for weeks. Honest reports show that and explain it. Our article on how long SEO takes to show results sets realistic expectations for the first year.

Compare that with our case studies, where results are described as impressions, CTR and organic growth with the context behind them. A business plan writing service that scaled to 814k impressions across the USA and Australia is reported with the markets, timeframe and pages involved, not as a single headline number.

What to Do If You Find Faked Numbers

  1. Document it. Screenshot Search Console and GA4 alongside the agency report.
  2. Ask for an explanation in writing. Sometimes it is a tracking error, not fraud.
  3. Request account ownership if you do not have it.
  4. Review your contract for termination for cause and handover terms.
  5. Get an independent review before you hire a replacement.

An independent SEO consultancy review is usually the fastest way to separate tracking mistakes from padded reporting.

A Note for Agencies Reselling SEO

If you resell SEO from a white-label partner, your client sees your name on every number. Verify the partner’s reports with the same checklist. Our article on what agencies should know before reselling white-label SEO covers reporting standards to agree upfront.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I check my SEO results without paying for tools?

Yes. Google Search Console, GA4 and Business Profile performance data are free and cover almost everything in this checklist.

Is it normal for rankings in reports to differ from what I see?

Some difference is normal because rankings vary by location, device and personalization. Large, consistent gaps suggest the report uses favourable settings.

How do I know if traffic is from bots?

Look for spikes from countries you do not serve, near-zero engagement time and no conversions. Real visitors behave unevenly. Bots behave identically.
